Our visit to Vathi, a rapidly developing area on Aegina, revealed a place with a rich history and growing community. Originally an agricultural area with few residents, Vathi has seen significant development since 1950, when Souvala, a nearby town, became a holiday resort. This transformation has given Vathi a new energy while retaining its traditional charm.
One of the first things we noticed in Vathi was the beautiful panoramic view from the houses on the hill. The elevated position provides a stunning outlook over the surrounding landscape, making it a desirable location for new residents and visitors alike. The big new primary school stands as a testament to the area’s growth and its appeal to families and younger generations.
Vathi’s history is deep-rooted, with archaeological finds indicating an age-old past. This historical backdrop adds a unique layer to the area’s development, reminding us that beneath the modern growth lies a rich cultural heritage.
The Church of Agia Triada is a notable landmark in Vathi, offering a peaceful spot for reflection and spiritual connection. Further up the hill, the chapel of Prophet Elias provides a serene retreat with a view. This small chapel, located above the settlement, is a quiet place to visit, ideal for those seeking tranquility and contemplation.
Just outside Vathi, on the road to Leonti, we found the Women’s Monastery of Panagia Eleftherotria. This monastery, with its serene atmosphere and beautiful surroundings, is a significant religious site that adds to the area’s spiritual landscape.
Vathi’s rapid development has brought new life to the area, making it a vibrant community with a mix of old and new. The combination of historical significance, scenic views, and modern amenities creates an appealing destination for visitors to Aegina. If you’re exploring the island and want to experience a blend of history and contemporary growth, Vathi is a must-see spot.
