Our visit to Aegina Town, the capital and main port of the island, was a delightful exploration of vibrant colors, historic landmarks, and a lively waterfront. The town’s beautiful neoclassical buildings, painted in an array of bright colors, immediately set the tone for a charming and welcoming experience.
As we walked through the narrow streets, we enjoyed the picturesque cafes and quaint squares, each offering a unique slice of local life. The port was a highlight, with tiny, colorful fishing boats gently bobbing in the water, creating a scene straight out of a postcard. The entire town seemed to burst with color, an effect heightened by the abundance of colorful pistachio nuts on display at every corner.
The waterfront along the long harbor was lined with cafes, fish taverns, and little shops, adding to the friendly and picturesque atmosphere. It was a pleasure to stroll along the water, taking in the views while enjoying the local delicacies and mingling with the friendly residents.
North of the port, just behind the small beach, stands the unique column that remains from an ancient temple dedicated to Apollo. Known as Kolona (column), this site was once the ancient acropolis of the island, perched on a low hill. Excavations in this area have uncovered various ruins and settlements dating back five thousand years, revealing layers of city life. The accompanying museum is small but rich in history, displaying a fascinating collection of artifacts from the ancient site.
Another notable site in Aegina Town is the neoclassical house where Nikos Kazantzakis wrote his famous novel “Zorbas the Greek.” Located in the suburb of Livadi, the house has a commemorative plaque, reminding visitors of the literary significance of the location.
Aegina Town also features a bustling fish market, situated on a road parallel to the waterfront, where you can find excellent taverns serving fresh fish and high-quality Greek cuisine. The market’s vibrant energy and the delicious aromas from the nearby taverns make it a must-visit spot for anyone who loves fresh seafood and traditional Greek dishes.
Overall, our visit to Aegina Town was a captivating experience, filled with beautiful architecture, historic sites, and a lively waterfront. Whether you’re interested in exploring ancient ruins, enjoying a leisurely stroll along the harbor, or indulging in delicious Greek food, Aegina Town has something for everyone. If you’re planning a trip to the island, this charming town should be at the top of your list.
