Our visit to Kypseli, a bustling area on the north-northwestern side of Aegina, was a vibrant experience, blending the island’s rich history with modern commercial growth. Known as one of the fastest-growing commercial zones on Aegina, Kypseli’s central avenue is lined with some of the largest and best-organized businesses, offering a glimpse into the area’s evolving economy.
Kypseli has a unique history, once called “Damaged” due to a half-ruined church that once stood near the current church. Another explanation links the name to a general disaster that might have occurred in the area. The village has also been known by other names, such as Marnas or Mezonisi, reflecting its layered past. Its present name was given in 1949, signaling a new chapter in its story.
The central square of Kypseli is home to its church, which celebrates March 25, the Annunciation. Directly across from it is the Kipseli Cultural Centre, serving as a hub for community activities and events. This area is the heart of the village, where locals gather for celebrations and cultural events, creating a lively atmosphere.
Kypseli’s fertile soil has made it a prime location for agriculture, with some of the largest pistachio estates on the island. For years, the cultivation of pistachios, along with agriculture and fishing, has been the primary occupation of its inhabitants. Even today, Kypseli produces high-quality agricultural products, and many visitors come to the area for its excellent taverns, which are known for their delicious food.
Kypseli also has a proud tradition in shipping, particularly in sponge fishing. The village once had some of the most famous sponge divers on Aegina, a testament to its maritime heritage. Additionally, the women of Kypseli are renowned for their artistry in Aegina kopaneli, a traditional craft that adds to the village’s cultural richness.
During our visit, we enjoyed exploring the central avenue, visiting the shops, and dining at the local taverns. The combination of historical significance, fertile landscapes, and a thriving commercial scene made Kypseli a unique destination on Aegina. If you’re looking for a place that encapsulates the essence of Aegina’s past while embracing its present, Kypseli is well worth a visit.
