Our journey to Ellanion Oros, the highest peak on Aegina at 532 meters, was an adventure filled with stunning landscapes, rich history, and spiritual significance. At its summit, we found the quaint church of Prophet Elias (Analipsius), a small yet meaningful landmark that offers breathtaking views of the island.
The route to Ellanion Oros was an experience in itself. We took the road to Perdika, passing by the old prison of Aegina, the Lyceum, and then through the charming village of Lefki. Continuing onward, we reached the village of Tzikida, from where a path begins, leading up to the chapel of Agios Andreas and the Monastery of Chrysoleontissa. The ascent to the top of Ellanion Oros was invigorating, with each step revealing more of the island’s beauty.
As we ascended, we were rewarded with panoramic views. From the vantage point of Pachia Rachi, we could see the sea to the right, with the town of Aegina in the distance. Further to the left, the lush green Agistri stood out, while in front, we had a clear view of the picturesque Perdika, the islet of Moni, and the distant peninsula of Methana. Along the beach, the settlement of Marathon added to the scenic tableau.
One of the most intriguing aspects of our visit was exploring the historical sites at the foot of Mount Ellanio. The dirt road from Pachia Rachi led us to the site of Sfirichtres, where steps guide you to the archaeological site of Ellanio Zeus, which holds the oldest altar dedicated to Zeus. This area once contained a guest house and cisterns for collecting rainwater, reflecting its historical importance. Excavations here unearthed fascinating artifacts, including a bronze hydria, jewelry, metal objects, and jars of wheat. Above the altar, the Church of Taxiarches now stands, blending ancient history with contemporary spirituality.
After our visit to the archaeological site, we continued our journey through the village of Anitsaios, eventually reaching the seaside village of Portes. From there, we made our way to Alones and Agia Marina, each offering its own unique charm and inviting atmosphere.
Overall, our visit to Ellanion Oros and the surrounding areas was a captivating blend of history, natural beauty, and spiritual tranquility. The journey to the peak and the exploration of ancient sites offered a deeper understanding of Aegina’s heritage, while the views and the serene environment made it a truly unforgettable experience. If you’re seeking a destination that combines breathtaking scenery with a touch of history, Ellanion Oros and its surroundings are a must-visit.
