During our recent exploration of Aegina, we had the privilege of discovering the house of the esteemed Greek writer and philosopher, Nikos Kazantzakis, nestled in the enchanting area of Livadi, just 2 km north of Aegina Town. Kazantzakis, celebrated as one of the most distinguished authors and thinkers of his time, found solace and inspiration in the serene surroundings of Aegina, particularly during the tumultuous period of the German occupation.
Kazantzakis’s affinity for Aegina dates back to the 1920s when he first visited the island and was captivated by its luminous light and picturesque landscapes. In 1935, he made a significant decision to purchase an estate in Livadi, where he commissioned the construction of his residence, designed by the architect Vasilis Douras. The house, completed in the same year, stands as a testament to Kazantzakis’s deep connection to the island and his appreciation for its unique charm.
Minimalist in style and harmoniously integrated with the island’s characteristic architecture, the two-story house exudes an inviting allure. Kazantzakis and his wife, Eleni, made this house their home for nearly a decade, from 1935 to 1946. During this time, the prolific writer produced a significant portion of his literary oeuvre, including his renowned rendition of the Odyssey. The house became a gathering place for fellow authors and artists, who frequented the residence to engage in stimulating discussions and enjoy the warm hospitality of the Kazantzakis couple.
While the house of Nikos Kazantzakis remains a private residence and is not open to the public, visitors can still admire its exterior during a leisurely stroll to the nearby cape of Plakakia. This scenic vantage point offers breathtaking views of the Saronic Gulf, providing a glimpse into the tranquil setting that inspired one of Greece’s most illustrious literary figures. Standing in the presence of Kazantzakis’s former abode, surrounded by the island’s natural beauty, one can’t help but appreciate the profound connection between the writer and the timeless allure of Aegina.
