Our visit to Portes, a quaint Greek fishing village on the east side of Aegina, was a journey into a place where tradition and natural beauty blend seamlessly. The village’s name is derived from “portes” (doors), reflecting its unique history. It’s said that the inhabitants built houses without windows, only with doors, as a protective measure against the pirate Barbarossa. This intriguing story adds a layer of mystique to the village, inviting visitors to explore its narrow streets and charming architecture.
Portes is a fishing village, and the locals primarily rely on fishing and tourism for their livelihoods. The landscape, with its rugged beauty, captivates visitors, offering a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of more commercialized areas. As we strolled through the village, we saw small fishing boats at the port, a reminder of the village’s deep connection to the sea.
Another explanation for the village’s name is its role as a port for shipping volcanic material, called Mafropetres, to Crete. This historical aspect adds to the village’s charm and sense of purpose, making it a fascinating destination for those interested in exploring lesser-known stories of Aegina.
Portes is also renowned for its ideal fishing areas at Kavos Antoni, making it a popular spot for scuba diving and underwater fishing. The clear waters and abundant marine life attract diving enthusiasts and those seeking a closer look at the underwater world.
The motorway ends at Portes, and there are several routes to reach the village. We took the path to the left after leaving Agia Marina, heading towards Alones, and then turning right to reach Portes. Alternatively, the road connecting Anitsaio to Portes offers another scenic route. Each path provides its own unique views and opportunities to enjoy the island’s natural beauty.
Overall, our visit to Portes was a delightful experience. The village’s rich history, combined with its fishing traditions and stunning landscapes, made it a memorable destination. Whether you’re interested in exploring a unique Greek village, enjoying some of the best fishing spots on the island, or simply relaxing in a place with a rich history and beautiful surroundings, Portes is an excellent choice. If you find yourself on Aegina’s east side, make sure to include Portes in your travel plans.
