The Aphaia Museum

During our visit to the archaeological site of the Temple of Aphaia, we had the opportunity to explore the adjacent museum that shares the same name. This museum is a treasure trove of ancient artifacts and a compelling addition to the historic site, providing valuable context and insights into the temple’s history and significance.

As we entered the Aphaia Museum, we were greeted by a detailed representation of the temple, which offered a visual guide to the site’s layout and structure. Inside the museum, we had the chance to admire a variety of artifacts, including statues, pottery vases, and ancient tools that provide a glimpse into the daily life and craftsmanship of the era.

One of the museum’s most important exhibits is the large part of the restored pediment from the Temple of Aphaia. This piece reveals the grandeur and intricacy of the architectural structure, allowing visitors to appreciate the artistry that went into its construction. Further into the museum, we came across the votive plaque dated to 560 B.C., which clearly states that the temple was dedicated to Aphaia. Aphaia was later identified with Athena, leading to the creation of a copy of the goddess Athena surrounded by warriors. This connection to Athena illustrates the temple’s evolving significance and provides a link to broader Greek mythology.

The history of the Temple of Aphaia is intertwined with its discovery by English and German archaeologists in 1811. Many parts of the temple were sold to Louis of Bavaria and eventually ended up in Munich in 1828, where they have been exhibited ever since. In a special hall of the Glyptothek of Munich, named “Aiginetes,” parts of the temple, including 17 statues and various relief sculptures, are displayed. This transcontinental journey underscores the temple’s historical importance and its impact on European art and archaeology.
