Monastery of Agios Nektarios

During our recent visit to Aegina, we had the privilege of exploring the Monastery of Agios Nektarios, undoubtedly the most significant religious monument on the island. Located just 6 km from the center of Aegina Town, this monastery holds deep historical and spiritual significance.

The monastery was founded by Bishop Nektarios of Pentapolis between 1904 and 1910, in response to the requests of several nuns. Although Bishop Nektarios settled in Aegina in 1908, the monastery began operating under his guidance in 1904, while he remained at the Rizarios School. For 13 years, Bishop Nektarios lived within the monastery, and upon his passing, he was laid to rest under a plane tree outside the monastery’s church.

Inside the monastery complex, visitors can explore two small chapels that house the tomb and holy relics of Agios Nektarios. Additionally, his cell, which served as his home, is open to the public, providing a glimpse into the saint’s daily life. Today, the monastery is home to 14 nuns who continue to uphold its spiritual legacy.

Adjacent to the monastery stands an impressive church dedicated to Saint Nektarios. This church features two towering bell towers and a facade adorned with red bows covering its windows. Ascending the steps, visitors will encounter the Church of the Holy Trinity, adding to the spiritual ambiance of the surroundings.

Agios Nektarios was renowned as a priest and educator during the early 20th century, known for his numerous miracles and healing abilities. One notable event involved the miraculous healing of a demonized man, while another involved his prayer for rain during a drought on the island, both of which were perceived as divine signs by the locals. After battling a severe illness, Agios Nektarios passed away in 1920, leaving behind a legacy of faith and devotion.

Today, the Monastery of Agios Nektarios is one of the most visited sites in Aegina, attracting pilgrims and tourists alike. Each year on November 9th, the island commemorates the saint’s memory with local festivities, further cementing his enduring influence on the community. Our visit to this sacred site left us profoundly moved by the spiritual resonance and historical significance it holds for the people of Aegina.
